Hey Dude.
Wanna start my own grow, wife doesn’t mind but doesn’t want the smell in house AT ALL so filter and fan is out since I will need to open the tent up to maintain the plants. Can’t grow indoors.
Garage is an option for a small tent but I live in Michigan and the garage is unheated. I know to raise the plants off the cold floor but beyond that how could I keep temps nice during lights out within range?
Hard to swing starting up in the fall when grow season will be during winter months. The concern over running a heater on auto in the garage along with other necessities will raise the bill.
How do/did you budget the cost of your grow setup and how do you keep the ladies warm?
Keep on keeping on.

It will be difficult to grow in an unheated area in the winter. You will need a heater and as you mentioned, it will make your electric bill go way up. There is the option of running the lights at night, but this will not provide anywhere near the heat to combat sub zero temps. Growing indoors is your best option. If you have a fan powerful enough sucking air out of the tent you will be able to be relatively smell free even when you open the tent. Also, if you place some ona gel in the living area there will be no smell at all. Don’t place this where the plants are growing or they will smell like the gel. I grow in an unheated, uninsulated basement in the winter. It’s a struggle to maintain reasonable temps. I do it, but it is not ideal. I can’t imagine trying to do so in an area that is above ground and is more directly influenced by the elements.
Where in the house would the tent have been? Talk her into letting you try with a carbon filter. Get a good negative pressure on the tent and there will be no smell in the house.
I agree with Steve. But, I also get what you are saying and everyone knows it WILL smell inside haha. In a garage with cold temps I’d run an old school MH/HPS setup and use the heat to your advantage. If you have the room set your garden up for a 1000w or more and blow your heat straight into your garage and depending on how cold you get at night you may not need much of a heater to keep it comfortable. Im thinking about heating my house with heat from my old 1000w cooltube so I have a reason to tell my wife why I need the guest bedroom for growing this winter. Its going to smell…

Idk I’m in the same situation and I grow inside using a carbon filter in a spare bedroom closet. I don’t get smell anywhere in my house at all and my super European family that smells fucking everything from a mile away has absolutely no idea because they can’t smell it when they stop by.
I grow in an unheated garage where the outdoor winter temps dip to -25F regularly. The garage space will see -10F. I placed my tent on a pallet and piece of foam board insulation, then insulated the outside of the tent with insulation board. I use a fan blowing through an oil filled heater that cycles to maintain temp along with my extraction fan cycling on a thermostat. The cost of the heater is minimal with this setup. I have considered running a small MH/HPS to supplement light and heat as I use cobs for lighting currently but as mentioned previously you will need a heater for the night cycle. I maintain 73-74F in winter with this setup. Lots of options for making a winter grow work
To go all out on hiding the smell, extract the room on a carbon filter as well. Send it outside to have a negative pressure in the room itself. Only a small negative pressure is needed. It works man, people have been hiding the smell of wee for decades.
