Reading a book called “wasted” Byron Reece and Scott Hoffman about all the ways we waste our resources. Everything being shipped individually (Printer cable, coffee machine, Uline sample) and No one giving a fuck about how much cheap plastic they use. Coffee machine lift handles. Uline sticker sample. Plastic is made from oil and oil is still relatively cheap. You get a lot of plastic out of a gallon of oil. Fill each water bottle ¼ full and that’s how much oil it took to produce that bottle. And then to make the 29 billion bottles purchased every year in the US, the oil bill climbs to 17 million barrels of crude oil. Per year!

Recycling probably increases our carbon footprint. When people see a recycle bin they unconsciously use more (Cups experiment). People throw out things like Milk Cartons that seem recyclable but they’re not. So they have to be sorted by hand. Single stream recycling doesn’t work and causes so much more waste because so much needs to be hand sorted and ends up in the landfill anyway as garbage. Broken glass on top of a bunch of newspapers. Plastic bottles that still have liquid in them can turn cardboard into useless mush. We waste people’s time employing them to to sort through recyclables, fuel to drive 2 separate fleet of trucks around, water to wash the bottles, etc.
Until 2018 we sent all our garbage to China to be recycled via empty shipping containers. They used to pay $150/ton for cardboard/ paper. Then it suddenly stopped and it changed everything. Instead of getting paid for our recyclables, we had to pay to do something with them. That broke the business model. Some cities like Philadelphia just burn it.

Exporting virtual water. Saudi Arabia drained their aquifer that took 10,000 years to fill in 50 years of growing wheat. Now they “import water” by growing water intensive crops on land they’ve purchased around the world, and importing those crops like corn, alfalfa, wheat and cotton.
