For the longest time I was growing the same strains and with every grow the stems would either show purple streaks or
in some cases turn a solid purple color. Up until now I thought it was “strain dependent” (pause, smoke). I’m now working with some new genetics and have 4 plants ,all of them different strains and they are showing the same traits. The plants are beginning week 3 of veg. I’m using a 21 on and 3 off cycle so for 21 hours a day the grow space temps are mid 70’s. During the 3 hours of darkness the ambient temperature might dip 10 degrees at the most so the plants are not being exposed to low temps. I have recently been hearing and reading where purple stems can be the result of an unhealthy plant. Everything else on the plants look healthy. Good color fan leaves, good vigor and growth etc.
Hoping the DGC will share a little knowledge and experience .
Thanks-Lord Blueberry
Do your new plants share any genetics with the previous stain.
Sorry I don’t have an answer but I’m about to pop for blueberry autos which if they come out anything like the site showed will have a purple color through the stems.
When I bought them I just assumed they would come out that way but recently as you have been hearing it can also be a sign of a bad environmental setup with it sounds like your temps are ok and the other thing I’ve heard it too many nutes.
What lights are you running? LEDs can do a weird thing where they purple on half the stem, the lit side. Flip it over and it’s green. Weird.
You were right about it being (get ready) strain dependent. Some strains have red or purple stems no matter how healthy they are. But if a strain that you know doesn’t have that trait starts to show red/purple stems, it could be a deficiency.
hello i don’t have an answer either but have same thing going on im just going to run with it and see how the next plant comes out good luck man
If it’s not genetics it could be a few diff things. Mag, or phosphorus deficiency can do this. I’ve also seen this on seedlings I’ve overwatered, not enough oxygen in the root zone. Hoping it’s just a genetic trait brotha. Good luck.
So many variables with “Purple Stems”
Some have a genetic predisposition to turn purple(a few of my strains, will do this no matter what)
Sometimes it can be a lack of phosphorous, due to a lock out,
and also ,from nitrogen deficiencies.
if temps are a little low that can also cause that…
and I honestly believe there a few more reasons why haha,,,
but I have found if your ladies are doing really good, then don’t sweat it,,,I have the purpling on more then less strains I have ran tbh…hope this helps,,,DGC Love

Most of the time this is caused by using too much calcium which locks out phosphorus. Your room is not really cold enough to cause purpling from temp. If all your plants are showing this purpling, I can all but guarantee it’s from too much calcium.
My tap water averages around 160 PPM and the PH is around 7.8.
I only add a Cal/Mag supplement when watering /feeding my Hempy
bucket which is mainly Coco. For my soil plants I don’t use a Cal/Mag
supplement. For soil I add Botanicare Grow, Liquid Karma, Terpinator
and Recharge and PH to 6.2. My friend who owns the local Hydro store where I shop
has told me my tap water is average from what he hears from other
customers and he believes there is a fair amount of Calcium and magnesium
in our water from the tap. Maybe too much as Jmystro suggested.??
Bro…. that’s a GREAT question man!!!! I have grown jack harer, Afghan, big bud, amnisia haze, and chocolope… all but the chocolope has had purple red stems on my fan leaves. Don’t sweat it man. You’ll have great Medicin if you slightly under dose your noots, PH (power of hydrogen) your water, and re-charge your soil…:-) grow on my brotha and take care…:-)
Hey Lord Blueberry. With your tap water registering at around 160 ppm, you shouldn’t need to add any cal/mag supplements. Oh and btw Spouse_Healer, pH stands for potential hydrogen. The power of hydrogen is divided by the power of Grayskull to equal it’s potential for upsetting Skeletor. 😉
Can it also be potassium lockout or deficiency mystro? I’ll post some pics of “blotching” on stems of mom’s that coincide with lack of feeding periods. I’m talking stems, not leaf parts….
The pic looks like a petiole on a leaf in which case good luck and don’t worry much about it.
